Service vs Portable

Windows DNS Server Software: Service Mode vs Portable Mode

DNS Server Sentinel is available as a Windows Service edition and as a Portable edition. Both use the same DNS features, but they fit different operational needs.

When this choice matters

The runtime mode matters when DNS becomes part of a workflow. A permanent machine-level resolver should behave differently from a temporary project-local tool. Choosing the right mode avoids confusion about where configuration is stored, how the server starts, and who is responsible for stopping it.

Use this comparison when deciding whether DNS Server Sentinel should run continuously for a workstation or network, or only when a specific project, demo, or development environment needs it.

Choose Service mode when

  • The DNS server should run continuously in the background.
  • The machine acts as a stable local DNS endpoint for a network or team.
  • You want service install, uninstall, start, and stop controls from Admin.
  • The configuration belongs to the machine under ProgramData.

Choose Portable mode when

  • The DNS server belongs to a project folder or demo package.
  • You do not want to install a Windows Service.
  • You need an easy no-install DNS server for local development.
  • You want to move the configuration together with the project.

Same DNS engine

Both editions support UDP and TCP DNS, zones, common record types, wildcard records, forwarding, cache, EDNS0, truncation fallback behavior, ignored domains, protections, and optional logs.
